  5. I LOVE your work. I just stumbled upon it. There is so much depth and the eyes of each character draw you in completely. Its like they mesmerize you and then tell you sweet nothings. Which in turn causes you to be completely at their mercy. Wow. I'm very inspired!

I've been posting my sketches on my blog. If you have a free moment, check them out. www.fufucostumes.blogspot.com

  8. Sweet witch man, and I really enjoyed seeing a bit of your process. I'm curious since you seem to prefer to use Painter; what benefits do you feel it has over Photoshop?

  16. Thanks for watching, I appreciate the nice words!

Leighton--I use Photoshop a bit for certain things, but the way the brushes blend in Painter are far superior imo.

Marcelo--It's about 2.5 hours condensed down to 7 minutes.

  23. Very very interesting. I'm surprised you do so much in Painter, I find I am constantly switching back and forth between programs. I am curious to know what brushes are your favorites.

It's really interesting to see how use textures too. I've found it frustrating to add textures my work, however, I love how it helps get rid of that computery look digital paintings often have. You do a great job of integrating them naturally.

Anyway, thanks for such a cool post.

  27. What an eye opener! I've learned a lot by watching this.

When I wanted to watch it for the second time. A message popped up saying " This movie is no longer available".

I either heard Homer Simpson make that high pitched yelp or I did it myself. I hit refresh and it was back... whew!

Those textures at the end.... what a great touch!! I was wondering... Are the images your own digital pictures orinternet sources?

    Ridiculously inspirational!!!!

  31. Hey Ryan - good timing man, I needed a little inspiration over here on the west coast.

  32. Hello.

I am relatively new in digital painting and while everything makes sense when watching your video tutorial I just can't find it that easy when it's my turn...:-)

Could you plz, when your time and mood permits, post a how-to with your key-points? By that I don't mean for you to explain light, volumes or color theory but how you colorize the grey-scale painting or some standard settings that you use while working with layers or brushes. I've read a couple of tutorials for gray scale painting (for PS) but the technique behind them is to have a color layer on top of the grey scale, a brush with really low opacity, to act as a base and then repaint everything on a normal layer because the colors on the color layer are off. Is this how you do it?

Thank you very much for your patience in reading this and for your continuous inspiration for all of us.

  35. This is an awesome video Ryan!! Your paintings rule..I love the way you can make something so cartoony look so realistic and vice-versa. The word "inspiring" is thrown around a lot on here, but for this post it really is true. Great work!

  36. Thanks Ryan (and little Tommy ;) ) - Great tut.
Alot of times I work like that as well - also more of a Painter user. I have not used the Gradients however- I'm curious as to how you used them, but it might be time to explore that myself.
Thanks again - we'll have to trade custom brushed on day.

Wow, this is a blanket comment.. All your stuff is great and I'm totally impressed by the video.. I've only done 2 pieces on the computer and it'll be a measly 200,000 more until I can do what you do. Thanks a bunch.

  51. HI! I love your witch painting and the whole idea of recording it, too! I got some great tips by watching it. My only question is how are you recording it? I don't see anything in painter to record what you are painting - am I missing it?

i have to say one little detail i really like about your work is the borders and presentation. i like that instead of the usual boring edges. it always adds a nice design detail to your paintings.

  55. Ryan,

That witch looks like a lot of fun! You said you use adobe and painter, right? I like to paint and draw, however I would like to start doing so digitally. Do you have any starting tips for me?

Maybe a book or a way to learn the programs?

I hope to hear back from you!

    Thanks,

    Hayden
